PRAGMATISM as a philosophy of education. The word pragmatism comes from the Greek word PRAGMATIKOS which means practicability or utility.If is an american school of thought.It is practical in approach.This philosophy is away from spiritualism and eternalism.It believes in thought and action.it emphasizes action rather than thought.it gives importance to practical significance of thought.It believes in practical experiences. CHIEF TENENTS OF PRAGMATISM- following points may be noted in this connection-- 1)they are active in the sense as they do not want to sit idle.They're are inquisitive in nature and interested in new results.They' follow the principle of learning by doing.APupil has to face his own problem and seeks solution by himself. 2)verbal situations are not considered by a pragmatist.3)it gives importance to the concreteness 4)The growth of personality is the product of action and democracy5) Values get themselves changed in accordance with the time and situation 6)Pragmatist lay stress on environment.According to pragmatists,environment is created and is not readymade and already exist ant.7) pragmatist gives importance on human power and say that man changes the environment according to his needs. 8) thought and knowledge emerge from enquiry. AIMS OF EDUCATION AND PRAGMATISM-----1)values are created by the man himself in the light of his own experiences 2)education should put a child to create new realities and values for himself 3) naturalism's condemns external authourity and interference in the free and harmonious development of the child.4)the educators duty is not to interfere in the actions of the child5) aims should change according to the needs and necessities 6)the main task of the educator is to put the educ and into position to develop values for himself. 7) the aim is to direct the impulses interests and abilities towards the satisfaction of the felt wants of the child in his environment 8)he must benefitt himself and also benefit the society as well as through his actions. PRAGMATISM AND CURRICULUM----- 1. PRINCIPLE OF UTILITY---the curriculum should provide only that information which is beneficial to the pupils.Subjects should impart practical knowledge and useful skills to the students.Thus skulls should also prepare them for future life.Curriculum's should include physical training,hygiene,language,history,geography,mathematics and science. 2)Child's NATURAL INTEREST-------------- child's natural interest should be kept in mind while prescribing the curriculum.Stages of development are followed by the stages of interests.The curriculum should be constructed in due regards of these stages of developments and interests of the children. 3)CHILDSOCCUPATION ,INTEREST AND ACTIVITIES------- this principle in regard to curriculum construction stresses the necessity of child's own experiences in the field of education.In the curriculum the activities should be purposeful. 4)PRINCIPLE OF INTEGRATION------------- the principle of integration is very important in curriculum construction.pragmatists warns us against teaching subjects as watertight compartments. pRAGMATIST AND M ETHOD OF TEACHING the principle of childcentred method is a relation with life.the method should not be apart from child's real situations.This interests and desires should also be considered while adopting a method of teaching. THE PRINCziPLE OF LEARNING BY DOING----pragmatism believes in actual working.learning process should have experience as the base.This philosophy accepts learning by doing. 3) THE PRINCIPLE OF INTEGRATION-------- human mind has so watertight compartments,therefore knowledge and skills should also be integrated as a whole.learning process should run from whole tho parts. 4)THE PROJECT METHOD--- this methods fulfill the conditions of a good learning process .This has been introduced by kilpatrick.project may be individual or social.socialized activities provide a rich experiences in co operation.they involve the use of principles of social relationship,division of lab our,willing acceptance of responsibility to community. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD------ knowledge is gained after experimentation.only those techniques of teaching are valid that would cultivate a dynamic and adaptable mind.It helps the student to use intelligence and the scientific method and it is the solution of problems that are meaningful to the child. PRAGMATISM AND TEACHER------the teachers work is to guide the child and put the child in real situation of his life,so that he may be able to understand his life's problem and thereby solve them.Pupils should be inspired to follow the principles of learning by doing or learning through experiences. PRAGMATISM AND DISCIPLINE-------- pragmatism believes in social discipline.personal discipline is not given a place.Discipline is a mental attitude and in order to maintain this attitude,socialized activities are essential.In social project play and work should be combined as this gives mental discipline.inner discipline should be there and it should be developed by keeping the children free and harmoniously.
